Residents anxiously waiting for the Big Four Bridge to be completed and open are a step closer to getting to use the bicycle and pedestrian bridge.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the City of Jeffersonville awarded a $6.5 million contract to Gohmann Asphalt and Construction of Clarksville for the construction of the Indiana approach to the Big Four Bridge. Gohmann’s bid was the lowest among 10 Indiana and Kentucky companies and 22 percent below the engineer’s estimate.
Construction bids initially came in higher than anticipated back in January so INDOT and Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore agreed to re-scope the project. The re-scoping included eliminating accommodations for a drainage tunnel beneath the floodwall. Successful re-bidding of the project saved taxpayers more than $5 million.
Construction is expected to begin mid-March and the new ramp will open to bicycles and pedestrians by March 2013. The Big Four is a former railroad bridge that is currently being renovated to allow bicycles and pedestrians to cross between Louisville’s Waterfront Park and the Jeffersonville riverfront. The new Indiana approach will pass over Riverside Drive, the floodwall, Mulberry Street and Market Street as it slopes down to a landing at the corner of Pearl and Chestnut streets.
