KY 22 widening construction to begin this week

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office announced that motorists might want to be aware of impending construction on KY 22 between Chamberlain Lane and Murphy Lane (mile points 4.0 and 5.6).

A press releases from the cabinet said the work is scheduled to begin later this week to widen KY 22 to three lanes in each direction between Chamberlain Lane and KY 1694. The section of roadway between KY 1694 and Murphy Lane will be widened to a three-lane section that includes a center turn lane. Right turn lanes will be constructed at key locations.

Kelsey Construction LLC of Shepherdsville, KY, was awarded the contract for this project in the amount of $6.3 million. The work is scheduled for completion in November of 2012.

Two-way traffic will be maintained between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. each day. Motorists should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the roadway. Lane closures may occur in the evening and overnight hours with traffic being directed by flaggers.

On average, 20,000 vehicles travel this section of roadway each day. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 35 MPH.

The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. 1. With all the new neighborhoods along this section of 22 it would be useful to complete the existing segments of pedestrian facilities (sidewalks) along 22. There are several places that folks can walk to including churches, school, and shopping - and many neighborhoods have sidewalk segments already along 22 or sidewalk leading to the edge of 22. Please include cross-walk at Murphy Ln. and 22 light.
Give us residents a way to not need the car for every trip we make to church or the store. Thanks.

Here is the response from KYTC:

Sidewalks will be installed on both sides of KY 22 from Chamberlain Lane to Silver Wing Boulevard as part of the KY 22 widening project. During the planning phase, Metro Public Works and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet determined that a sidewalk along KY 22 from Silver Wing Boulevard, east toward Murphy Lane would have negative environmental impacts. The bridge over Hite Creek can only accommodate the three lane section and the tributary feeding Hite Creek comes in too close to the proposed roadway to allow sidewalks.

Connectivity is most often a priority on new projects. However, at this time, a sidewalk is not feasible east of Silver Wing Boulevard due to the reasons stated above.

We are reviewing the request for a cross-walk at KY 22 and Murphy Lane.
