Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Wants to Hear From You!

In 2035, what will be Kentucky's transportation needs? Will our focus be on maintaining and improving existing roadways, constructing new roads, or issues concerning other modes of transportation? Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) officials are asking these questions as they update the Kentucky Long Range Transportation Plan.

Just like KIPDA has been working on a long range plan,  KYTC is updating the state's plan and they need your input. They want your help in determining the transportation needs for all areas of Kentucky over the next two decades. The plan will consider changes in communities, freight movement, financial resources, economic development, rural and urban transportation, the environment and other transportation issues that are impacting you.

The new plan will be an overarching policy guide with goals, objectives and strategies to address the core transportation opportunities and challenges facing each of us. KYTC has come up with a confidential survey to gauge your transportation expectations.

The “Your Turn” survey will be online and available through Feb. 25. It consists of 19 questions.
It is available in electronic and hard copy form in English and Spanish. A link to the “Your Turn” survey and other transportation information can be found by visiting www.transportation.ky.gov and clicking on the “Your Turn” survey link. You can also access “Your Turn” directly at the link yourturn.transportation.ky.gov. This direct link will also provide compiled survey results in late 2013 as well as other information throughout the update of this Long Range Plan.

 Paper surveys are available at:

·         KYTC highway district offices

·         Area Development District offices, including KIPDA, 11520 Commonwealth Drive in Louisville.

·         Metropolitan Planning Organization offices, , including KIPDA, 11520 Commonwealth Drive in Louisville.

·         Transportation Cabinet Office Building, 200 Mero St., Frankfort

For more information or to request a survey, call the cabinet weekdays from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. eastern time at (502) 564-3419.

Lanes Closures Begin Monday on the Second Street/George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge

If you use the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge/Second Street Bridge to travel to work you're going to need to build in some extra time beginning Monday.

Work is scheduled to begin the week of January 14th for steel and sidewalk repairs on the Indiana approach, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction 24 hours a day while crews replace handrails and sidewalks and repair bridge expansion joints.  Hall Contracting is permitted two 30-day time periods for the lane closures, one for each side of the bridge. Work will begin in the southbound lanes on Monday at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting.

The cabinet says about 15,000 vehicles cross this bridge each day. These travelers will have to slow down as the speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 25 MPH for the duration of the project. The project will be signed as a double fine work zone.

Hall Contracting was given $1.07 million for the project, which has a completion date of April 15, 2013.

The painting of the steel on the Indiana approach will be performed under separate contract this summer. Lane closures on the bridge will not be needed to perform this work, but some sidewalk closures may be necessary.

Actual starting date is subject to change in the event of inclement weather or other unforeseeable delays. For construction and traffic updates, visit http://transportation.ky.gov/District-5/Pages/District-5-Traffic-Advisories.aspx. Traffic information for all eight counties in District 5 is also available at www.facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5. Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
